Surveyor FAQ
- What does Surveyor provide that the "policy settings" of Active Directory or other network management tools do not?
- Instead of purchasing Surveyor software, why shouldn't management just create a sustained marketing effort (posters, stickers, e-mail, audits) to encourage employees to turn off their PCs and create good conservation habits?
- Can IT personnel bump client computers out of hibernate at will from the central server?
- How does Surveyor server identify client computers? What if the IP address of a client changes?
- If a client computer is unplugged from the network, can the user change power settings?
- How/when does a client computer find out if its energy policy has been changed?
- To upgrade Surveyor, is re-installation of clients necessary?
- Does Surveyor Client always occupy 7 MB of RAM?
- What is Surveyor's impact on scheduled software deployments, upgrades, or clients used for overnight batch runs?
- Are Surveyor clients always connected to their server?

Surveyor
- OS Comparison (23k)
This chart compares and contrasts existing native power management operating system features with that of Surveyor. Surveyor effectively and safely balances the often-competing goals of energy efficiency and user productivity in the modern network while supporting the needs of energy managers for measurement and verification and IT managers for network performance and user productivity.

Excerpt in Electronic Perspectives (63k)
This article from the January-February 2004 issue is a publication of the prestigious Edison Electric Institute (www.eei.org). It shows the massive use of plug load energy by computers, workstations, servers and their monitors consuming over 50% of the office energy use. The Verdiem Surveyor software is highlighted as a good solution to this problem.
CFO Magazine Article (1 MB)
This article published in January 2004 discusses the largest users of electricity in office environments, provides testimonial quotes from users of Surveyor and concludes with a stunning quote "Fully 75% of the business computers in the US have their power-management features disabled."
ROI
calulator (MS Excel file)
This Excel file allows the user to accurately model the computer energy
environment with respect to electric rate, computer leave on rates,
average computer power, and various energy conservation policies. The
output is break-even and annual savings.
Break
Even Charts
These charts show the break-even in months for a range of PC leave-on rates versus average electric rate, along with annual savings per PC for varying electric rates. Assumptions include: 1,000 PCs; 10% to 40% of PCs are manually turned off at night; average power per PC with monitor is 150 watts; monitor powersave uses 8 watts; PC Standby or Hibernate uses 5 watts; and the installation cost is $2,500.
After
Hours Survey Data (MS Excel file)
This chart shows the results of after hours in-person energy surveys conducted primarily by Ryan S. Wood for potential customers from 1998 to present. The data represents the physical inspection of over 35,000 computer monitors of various sizes and operating systems at 38 customer sites. The data shows an average 24/7 computer leave on rate of 43.3%.
